Is the Ex German Bundeswehr UNIMOG the best off-road vehicle money can buy?!
The U 1300 L was built as a special vehicle for the Bundeswehr and the German fire department.
We cannot think of a more capable truck for the price. Right now you can pick one of these up for around $40,000 not including shipping from overseas!
It is a rear wheel drive vehicle with selectable four wheel drive (part time four-wheel drive). The gearbox is a fully synchronized 8-speed manual gearbox with lockable differentials. A reduction gear and a crawler gear were available as additional accessory. Depending on the built in gear box and portal axle final drive ratio the top speed is between 80 and 100 km/h (50 and 62 mph). The brake system uses compressed air to activate the dual hydrau...

The Dreaded SBU Unimog Front Axle Bolt!

Unimog has upgraded this 16 mm bolt design to an 18 mm that requires some other ancillary, expensive parts to be replaced like the upper drive gear, CV yoke, etc. This drive gear coming loose results in a big, expensive problem. Getting enough bolt stretch is not possible because the torque required can strip the threaded yoke. Heating the bolt to 500 F gives around .7 mm elongation without str...

Six foot deeper than the other side! It only got worse after this. 12 hours and five other machines to get out and back home only a few miles away 15,000 pounds goes down deep into the icy swamp fast!

Our 1989 prototype MAN /GMC in our tank trap for initial testing. It sets at about 48,000 lbs as tested. The hook loader is the key to recovering our BIG rigs on our proving ground and the pls "palletized load system" can exchange the flat track for huge expedition body or fire/tanker unit as well as dozer or Unimog retriever .

Roughly how much does it cost to purchase and import one of these as-is? Just wanna know before I day dream about blowing my life savings too much.
You should buy a Saurer 2DM or a Mowag Duro.
Great stuff. The Unimog is really something else. Bringing back some fun memories to my own time in the Bundeswehr. Clueless 19 year old me thought initially "why do we use that old stuff, cant we get some newer equipment?" Little did I know...

Lots if great content in here i'm interested in, mine is very loud inside a well, just got a 78 unimog 416 very similar but hand throttle is down by the foot pedal, it's nice to hear someone else discuss driving operation and its quirks. Hopefully a new video is made with similar content and audio improved.

I came here after seeing the tour of the shop and offroading the unimog on TFLoffroad channel. I was hoping I would find more building content. On the other hand if I had so many cool projects I would also prefer to focus on them rather than running around with a camera and then editing. I hope one day I will afford one of Your builds!
I saw a 411 in a youtube video from Mexico. The 411 was upgraded with a bigger engine from a Nissan . I think it had well over 100 horse power which is alot for a little vintage unimog .
